Overview

Compounded semaglutide is custom-prepared by licensed pharmacies under FDA section 503A or 503B. It became widely available during the FDA-declared shortage of brand-name semaglutide. As of late 2024 the FDA has begun phasing out the shortage status — compounded supply going forward depends on patient-specific clinical need.

How it works

Same active molecule as Wegovy and Ozempic. The difference is supply chain (compounding pharmacy versus Novo Nordisk) and formulation (often combined with B12 or other additives).

Side effects

  • Identical GI profile to brand-name semaglutide
  • Additional risk: variability in potency and additives between compounding pharmacies
  • Not FDA-reviewed for safety or efficacy as a finished product

Who should consider Compounded Semaglutide

Cash-pay patients who can't access brand-name semaglutide and have discussed compounded options with their prescriber. Verify the pharmacy is licensed and audited.
